National Girls Inc. Week
Speakers Help Prepare Girls for Bold Future
Girls Inc. is committed to helping every girl envision a bright future and prepare to achieve it. During Girls Inc. Week- May 7-11, 2012- girls at Girls Inc. of the Island City will network with women leaders in government, science, math, technology, and sports to get interested and excited about the range of occupations open to them.
In 2012, achieving a bright future still involves beating the odds.
- Women run just 12 of the Fortune 500 companies and make up only 19% of Congress
- Nearly all of the 30 fastest growing occupations in the next decade will require at least some background in science & math, but women are still underrepresented in these crucial fields.
- Women are more likely to be poor than men across all ages and races. By the time they reach old age, women are twice as likely as men to live in poverty.
The theme for Creating my Bold Future opens the door for girls to discover the many pathways to success. Involvement from adult role models will enhance a sense of community while helping to prepare our future workforce by igniting girls' interest in growing career fields that are currently under-represented by women.

Teens Find Commonality at Girls Inc. Teen Summit
Middle and High School Girls Get Platform to Discuss Issues Important to Them
Over 50 teen girls from Alameda and the East Bay came together on Saturday, April 21st to talk about the issues important to them at Girls Inc. of the Island City’s Teen Summit: Healthy Teens Inside and Out. Inspired by Keynote Speaker, Amy Ahlers, and through participation in different workshops, many participants found strength and felt safe being able to speak freely with their peers, many of whom had similar concerns and worries about fitting in, increased violence and bullying, identity, and body image.
According to one participant, “I was very low before coming here. Now I feel engaged and better about myself.” Another participant liked Teen Summit because she could "connect with other girls and talk out what their lives are about- how hard it is or how hard not hard it is".
We are so grateful to the following individuals and businesses whose time, energy, and contributions made Teen Summit possible: Amy Ahlers, Kiely Hosmon, Sopiea Mitchell & Mike Lee, Sophistry Skin, Linda Grant, Krizten Delossantos, Jasmine Walls, Nicole Davenport, GIRLfriend Angie Carmignani, Ryan Chesire, Bank of Alameda, Marsha Harrison, Jamestown Creative, Panera Bread, Trader Joes, Daphne's Greek Cafe, Excel Graphics, MarleyB Studio, Bon Voyage Luggage, Fruits & Chocolate, Modern Mouse, Chipotle Mexican Grill, See Jane Run, Loard's Ice Cream, and European Wax Center.

Novartis Employees Volunteer at Girls Inc.
Volunteer Day Spruces up Meyers Center
The girls are thrilled with the newly painted Rooms B & C, back stairs, and lines and games in the outdoor/parking area. Twenty seven volunteers from Novartis descended on our facility with all of the necessary supplies to clean, prep and paint the facility, including Girls Inc. of the Island City alumnae, Girls Inc. National Scholar and Novartis employee, Natasha Walls, who began Girls Inc. teen program with 3 other girls in 2003 and who helped to establish Teen Zine. A major thanks to our own Board Member, Arlette Walls, who facilitated having our facility as one of the 43 sites for the annual Novartis Bay Area workday. On the Novartis International workday, over 27 thousand employees, provided 200 thousand hours of service, in 54 countries.
